CASE 14

 

PATIENT:  35-year-old man

 

CHIEF COMPLAINT:  This patient was admitted for evaluation of a lifelong tendency to ooze from superficial wounds.  In addition to the oozing, he reported a history of easy bruising and occasional formation of large, unsightly hematomas.

 

MEDICAL HISTORY:  The patient had a lifelong history of abnormal bleeding from superficial wounds.  He had no history of surgical intervention or transfusion.

 

FAMILY HISTORY:  There was a family history of bruising and abnormal bleeding from superficial wounds.  In addition, the patient reported that several family members had died of head injuries.  In each instance, the trauma associated with the head injury was relatively minor.

 

DRUG HISTORY:  No medication

 

PHYSICAL EXAMINATION:  Several large ecchymotic areas were noted over the legs together with hematomas over the thighs and upper left arm.
